Family holidays are what memories are made of. When I look back at my childhood holidays they are still the memories I cherish today, and the best kind of holidays; think splashing in the sun, ice creams, laughs and fun.

These days the world is much smaller, meaning more destinations are open to more visitors. Some of the best family resorts in the world offer entertainment, sun, beaches, great food, and plentiful attractions to keep young minds occupied, but the choice can be so large that it’s hard to pin-point a favourite. To help you, here’s five of the most popular destinations for that perfect family holiday.

Barbados

Luxurious and costly? Not necessarily costly, but luxurious yes! Despite that, Barbados family holidays are becoming increasingly popular, and an island that was once known for glamour and not a lot other than sun, is now hugely attractive. The sheer number of attractions on offer, including the Atlantis Submarine, Welchman Hall Gully and Harrison’s Cave to name a few, means that aside from splashing on a beach day, there is plenty to keep youngsters more than amused.

Orlando, Florida

The king of theme park holidays offers more thrills and spills than probably any other destination in the world. Disney World, Universal Studios, Seaworld, Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove – these are all attractions kids dream of visiting. Aside from that you have amazing shopping, beautiful beaches nearby, the Everglades, and delicious food.

Canary Islands

The good thing about the Canary Islands as a holiday destination is that all islands offer year-around sun, so if you fancy a bit of beach time when the rest of the country is shivering, then it’s in very easy reach, at very affordable prices too. The large holiday village-style resorts, usually all inclusive, are fantastic value for family holidays, meaning you don’t have to budget for food and drinks, and there are some bargains to be had too. Huge water-parks, boat trips, golden beaches, volcanic landscapes – there is an island for every taste.

New York

If you fancy a holiday that doesn’t involve a beach, New York is an amazing choice. Packed with museums, shows, attractions, food, shopping and countless other entertainment options, New York is a holiday that is sure to blow your youngster’s mind. An elevator ride to the top of the Empire State Building or a visit to the zoo, checking out the Statue of Liberty, or heading to Times Square? All very easily done.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The Yucatan Peninsula is hugely popular, but for family holidays Playa del Carmen in particular offers plentiful attractions. The beaches are typically amazing, but there are also educational archaeological sites to check out, theme parks, Discovery Jungle Park, Xcaret and its natural wonders, and all in the beautiful Mexican sun.
