Dear Michael,
I am a Wellesley College professor (who taught your book in her classes) and am a Somalist (Women's Voices in a Man's World, 1999, on folklore texts and the Somali pop song as they related to gender relations); lots of song texts; texts is what I work on, though I try hard to provide context too.
I think that I have read most of what you wrote (especially in the Village Voice), but that mostly deals with the USC war between Aidid and Mahdi. Were you writing at the time that the Barre regine collapsed?
